MAPA Spring Extravaganza/MOVES 2016 was an amazing success. MAPA dance students shined in four dance concerts on Maui over the weekend: the Jazz, Tap & Hip Hop Revue, MOVES – an extraordinary evening of original choreography featuring MAPA’s highest level dancers, and the Ballet Recital, Sleeping Beauty.
The students and teachers all did an extraordinary job. Dance Director Kathleen Schulz said it best, addressing the dance instructors on Facebook:
I can’t tell you all enough how grateful I am for each and everyone of you. You put so much love and positive energy into your students, it was amazing. The time and thought that went into each creative and artistic piece. The energy and commitment that goes into a weekend like this is daunting and I just wouldn’t and couldn’t do it without all of you. I am so proud of what we presented this weekend.
Here are some highlights from the weekend.
On April Fool’s Day this year, the King Kamehameha Golf Club was awash in costumes and pageantry as we celebrated our 2016 Spring Gala, themed DeLights of Broadway. It was a great evening of Broadway-quality entertainment, delicious food and delectable libations.
The event raised funds for for MAPA’s Youth Performing Arts Programs.
Each table was lovingly decorated in the theme of a popular Broadway musical by MAPA staff and board members, and guests were encouraged to come in costumes or dressed for an evening at the theater.
Our amazing entertainers put on a mini show produced by Hoku Pavao Jones, along the lines of the audition scene in A Chorus Line, with Ricky Jones in the role of the director and stunning performances by “auditioners” Dylan Bode singing You’ll Be Back from Hamilton, Kepa Cabanilla-Aricayos singing Hold Me In Your Heart from Kinky Boots, Eric Gilliom singing Flesh Failures/Let the Sunshine In from Hair, Kathryn Holtkamp singing Defying Gravity from Wicked, Lia Krieg singing On My Own from Les Miserables, Leighanna Locke singing Think of Me from Phantom of the Opera, Joey Schumacher singing On This Night of a Thousand Stars from Evita, and Kristi Scott singing her own version of Confrontation from MAPA’s Summer Musical at the MACC, Jekyll and Hyde.
Our fabulous live auction packages included a trip to New York for two, with round-trip airfare, a Broadway show and a tour of the city by an “angry New Yorker” (pizza included), a private dinner party on the beautiful Lahaina Mango Estate catered by Chef Lyndon Honda and featuring live entertainment from MAPA’s own Leighanna Locke and Kim Vetterli, a 5-night stay in picturesque Breckenridge, CO courtesy of The Bello ‘Ohana, and an all-day trip on the Maui Jim Fishing Boat.
Our guests got a taste of life behind the scenes by participating in games such as Tame the Diva, Prop Drop, Kickin’ with Kathleen! and Costume the Chorus. Guests who completed the circuit qualified for a prize drawing.
It was an amazing evening and a successful fundraiser – MAPA’s best Spring Gala yet, according to our guests. We hope to see you at our next Spring Gala in 2017.
